“Infinity” Project by Phi Studio and Felix & Paul studios

Multi-sensory,interactive virtual reality experience

“INFINITY” is a multi-sensory,interactive virtual reality experience aboard the International Space Station.  It will welcome more than 1000 visitors per day and about 100 spectators will use VR headsets (Oculus Quest 2) in the same physical space in real time to live this large-scale immersive experience.

In order to ensure the fluidity and efficiency of the experience, a monitoring interface must be conceptualized, deployed and made available to exhibition staff in different media. Studio Phi is looking for a Montreal-based supplier to help develop the monitoring interface, both from a user experience management perspective (visitors) and for the administrative management of the exhibition. The interface system should be modular in order to be reusable for future initiatives with similar requirements.

Solution

Logient has the team and the expertise to meet the needs of the project. It proposes to dedicate a mobile developer, a Web front-end developer and a PM to the project. That team will work closely with Phi Studio in order to implement a solution built on the respective experience of each team:
Develop a system service on the virtual reality headset to manage the virtual application, as well as the headset systems (such as volume) and to provide information on energy consumption (battery). The performance and consumption of this service are essential points to consider. Logient suggests using Android’s WorkManager API for headset monitoring since it is the lightest option in terms of resource consumption.
In order to allow room operators to work on participants’ headsets in the event of a problem, an Android application on a tablet must be developed. This will allow scanning the QR codes present on the headsets, sending commands to the back-end (start or switch off the headset selected by the scan), continuously sending the position of the tablet when it is in activity. The application will also display an experience management console Web interface.
Project management was done in agile mode and was broken down into 2 sprints of 2 weeks, one for the headset and one for the tablet, with 3 demonstrations.

Results

The collaboration between the Phi and Logient teams has been a success, mainly due to the bi-weekly meetings and the dedication of each party.

Studio Phi can now open its doors and bring the immersive experience to Montreal, but also internationally. Each hour, around 100 participants will be able to walk around the space with the virtual reality headset on, without bumping into each other and without running out of battery.

The headset is now monitored and the Android tablet application and Web interface are functional and up to expectations. The solution has been designed and developed in a modular way, which will allow it to be reused and to evolve.

Customers were able to enjoy the following benefits:
Minimizing actors with a web and mobile service under one roof.
Exceeded consumer and experience goals through choice of tools.
Reusable and scalable solution.
